Building Healthy Data for Trustworthy AI: Insights from Morgan Templar

AI is only as strong as the data it’s built on. For Morgan Templar, CEO of First CDO Partners and founder of Get Governed, this isn’t just a principle—it’s her life’s work. With a career spanning healthcare, government, and enterprise leadership, Morgan has helped organizations move from chaotic, paper-based operations to building healthy data ecosystems that fuel innovation.

On Industry Ignited, she sat down with Dr. Leeanne Aguilar to share her leadership journey, the difference between data debt and tech debt, and what it really takes to make AI trustworthy, scalable, and transformative.

From Paper Stacks to Chief Data Officer

Morgan’s career began in the paper-heavy world of healthcare operations. She recalls days when patient data lived in binders stacked to the ceiling, and every audit meant sifting through boxes of forms.

“It wasn’t just inefficient—it was dangerous,” she explains. “We couldn’t harness the insights we needed because we weren’t treating data as an asset.”

That realization propelled her into the emerging world of data governance—a field where she would eventually serve as Chief Data Officer, advisor, and now CEO.

Data Debt vs. Tech Debt

One of Morgan’s most powerful lessons is distinguishing between data debt and tech debt:

  • Tech debt comes from shortcuts in systems and software that must be repaid through upgrades or fixes.

  • Data debt is more insidious—it builds up when organizations neglect data quality, standards, and governance.

“Tech debt is visible. Data debt hides until you’re in crisis,” Morgan warns. “You can buy new systems, but if your data is bad, you’re just pouring garbage into shiny tools.”

The Hidden Risks of Unstructured Data

Email threads. SharePoint folders. Chat logs. These unstructured data sources make up the largest category of risk in most organizations.

“Leaders underestimate how much unstructured data drives legal exposure,” she notes. “If you don’t govern it, you’re one subpoena away from disaster.”

Morgan advocates for mapping, classifying, and actively governing unstructured sources—not just structured databases—to reduce risk and uncover hidden value.

From Data to AI: Readiness Matters

With organizations rushing to deploy AI, Morgan stresses a critical truth: healthy AI requires healthy data.

She offers executives a practical AI readiness checklist, including:

  • Clear data ownership and governance.

  • Standardized definitions and taxonomies.

  • Continuous monitoring and feedback loops.

  • Alignment with emerging regulations like the EU AI Act.

“Don’t just play with AI,” she advises. “Move from using AI to doing AI—embedding it into processes, continuously testing outcomes, and making it trustworthy at scale.”

Leadership and Resilience

Morgan’s professional insights are shaped by personal resilience. She shared moments when family health crises forced her to balance caregiving with career acceleration. Those experiences deepened her empathy as a leader.

“Your people bring their whole selves to work,” she says. “If you don’t support them as humans, you can’t expect them to deliver as employees.”

She also champions DEI in data teams, noting that diverse perspectives lead to stronger governance and better AI outcomes.

Final Thought

For Morgan Templar, data governance isn’t about bureaucracy—it’s about trust.

As she puts it:

“Healthy data creates healthy AI. And healthy AI drives real business results.”

With AI poised to reshape industries, her message is clear: organizations that invest in data governance today will lead with confidence tomorrow.
