Battery-Free Power and the Art of Persistence — with Larry Richenstein of WePower Technologies

What if the future of clean energy doesn’t come from bigger batteries or more wires—but from motion itself?

In this episode of Industry Ignited, Dr. Leeanne Aguilar sits down with Larry Richenstein, founder and CEO of WePower Technologies (also known as GEMS), to explore a radical idea: a world where sensors, switches, and IoT devices power themselves—forever—by harvesting energy that already exists all around us.

With a career spanning law school, consumer electronics, wireless innovation, and angel investing, Larry shares hard-earned lessons about entrepreneurship, persistence, and why breakthrough technology often takes longer to be accepted than to be invented.

From Law School to Lifelong Entrepreneurship

Larry never planned to practice law. Although he completed law school and passed the bar, he quickly realized his true passion lived elsewhere—building businesses. That early self-awareness shaped a career defined by independence, experimentation, and resilience.

Rather than climbing a corporate ladder, Larry chose to create lean, efficient companies with small teams and smart business models. His approach emphasized flexibility, low overhead, and direct accountability—principles that would guide every venture that followed.

The Most Expensive Education: Learning When to Cut Bait

One of Larry’s earliest startups produced both success and failure. While his karaoke business thrived at major retailers, a side project—an interactive guitar product—became a costly lesson.

Feature creep, loss of product focus, and external dependencies derailed the innovation. Looking back, Larry points to a critical takeaway:

Define the product. Stick to it. And never give up control of your vision.

That experience became foundational—teaching him that leadership means making hard decisions early, before time and capital are exhausted.

A Lean Mindset That Scales

Across multiple ventures, Larry consistently challenged traditional business norms. From shipping products container-only to requiring letters of credit from retailers, he engineered models that minimized financial risk while maximizing competitiveness.

Even when supplying major brands like GM and Ford, his teams stayed intentionally small. The result? Agile organizations that delivered real value without bloated infrastructure.

“If the product is real, delivery is solid, and pricing is right,” Larry explains, “why add overhead just to look bigger?”

Reinventing Power: Inside GEMS Energy Harvesting

At WePower Technologies, Larry is tackling one of the biggest inefficiencies in modern technology: batteries.

GEMS energy harvesting technology converts motion into usable electrical energy—without wires or batteries. Using advanced magnet and coil designs, WePower generates significantly more energy and for much longer durations than existing kinetic solutions.

This breakthrough enables battery-free wireless transmissions that are reliable, repeatable, and scalable across platforms—from Bluetooth to Zigbee to LoRa.

The implication? Devices that can operate for decades without maintenance.

Why Breakthrough Innovation Faces Resistance

Despite the promise, adoption hasn’t been instant. Larry highlights a familiar challenge: no one wants to be first.

In conservative industries, early adoption carries more perceived risk than reward. Even when interest is high, long redesign cycles and internal inertia slow decision-making.

Larry’s response has been persistence.

Showing up year after year, proving durability, and staying solvent long enough to build trust have become strategic advantages. “Being here again,” he says, “is credibility in itself.”

Pivoting with Purpose: From Licensing to Real Products

Originally envisioned as a pure licensing company, WePower pivoted to build reference products that demonstrate what battery-free power can truly do.

One standout innovation is a battery-free liquid leak detector—capable of sitting idle for decades and transmitting a signal the instant water is detected. Powered by magnet repulsion, the device offers what Larry calls “forever power.”

This pivot opened doors in smart homes and smart buildings, where eliminating battery replacement means massive savings in labor, cost, and reliability.

Smart Homes First, Then Everywhere

While applications range from aerospace to healthcare, Larry believes smart homes and buildings will be the first market to fully embrace battery-free technology.

From light switches outlawed from using non-replaceable batteries in Europe to maintenance-heavy hotel controls, the demand for self-powered devices is growing fast.

WePower’s technology enables sealed, water-resistant, maintenance-free designs—an advantage that traditional battery-powered devices simply can’t match.

Angel Investing Lessons: Teams Matter More Than Ideas

As an investor in over 80 early-stage companies, Larry has seen firsthand what separates winners from failures.

Great ideas aren’t enough. Strong, coachable teams—and founders who know what they don’t know—are critical. So is capital discipline.

“Running out of money,” Larry says, “is still the number one killer of startups.”

His advice to founders is clear: plan for 18–24 months without income, preserve capital, and avoid chasing every shiny opportunity.

Staying Curious, Staying Young

After decades of innovation, Larry shows no signs of slowing down. What drives him forward isn’t fear of missing out—it’s genuine curiosity.

“I’m proud of the kid in me,” he says. “I don’t ever want to lose that.”

It’s that mindset—combined with discipline, persistence, and optimism—that continues to power his work and reimagine what’s possible.
