Beyond Beauty: Building a Skincare Brand with Purpose, Sustainability, and Global Vision

What does it take to transform a personal health challenge into an internationally recognized skincare brand? For Ayesha Ibrahim, CEO and founder of Honeycorn, it started with one simple question: Could nature provide a better solution than conventional products?

In this episode of Industry Ignited, Dr. Leeanne Aguilar sits down with the award-winning entrepreneur to discuss how Honeycorn grew from a kitchen-table startup into an ethical beauty brand gaining international recognition. Their conversation goes beyond skincare, exploring entrepreneurship, sustainability, resilience, and the realities of building a purpose-driven business in today’s global economy.

Building a Business Around Real-Life Problems

Honeycorn wasn’t created because Ayesha wanted to enter the beauty industry. It was born from necessity.

After becoming a mother, she struggled to balance a traditional nine-to-five career while caring for her young son. Flexible work arrangements weren’t available, forcing her to rethink what success and work-life balance could look like. Around the same time, postpartum eczema led her to research natural alternatives to steroid creams, eventually discovering the remarkable properties of honey.

Instead of simply accepting the status quo, she combined extensive historical research with market testing, proving there was genuine demand for natural, honey-based skincare products. Starting with local markets and pop-up events gave her the confidence to gradually transform an idea into a scalable business.

Start Small, Learn Fast

One of Ayesha’s strongest messages is that entrepreneurship isn’t about having every answer before you begin.

Rather than waiting for the perfect business plan, she embraced continuous learning by:

  • Working with local business support organizations
  • Protecting intellectual property early
  • Learning legal and regulatory requirements
  • Testing products before scaling
  • Seeking experienced mentors throughout her journey

Instead of seeing inexperience as a weakness, she viewed every challenge as an opportunity to gain knowledge. According to Ayesha, successful entrepreneurs remain lifelong students.

Turning Challenges into New Opportunities

Like many businesses, Honeycorn encountered unexpected external obstacles.

Brexit dramatically complicated exports into Europe, introducing new regulations, taxes, and logistical hurdles. Rather than allowing these changes to stall growth, Ayesha pivoted toward new international markets.

When China’s regulations changed to allow ethical beauty brands to enter without mandatory animal testing, Honeycorn seized the opportunity. Today, the company has successfully launched into the Chinese market through strategic partnerships and government-supported trade missions.

Her story highlights an important lesson for business leaders: resilience often means adapting strategy rather than abandoning vision.

Sustainability as a Business Strategy

For Honeycorn, sustainability isn’t a marketing slogan—it’s built into every part of the business.

From responsibly sourced ingredients to partnerships with environmentally conscious suppliers, every decision considers long-term environmental impact. One particularly unique initiative includes providing UK customers with native wildflower seeds to help support declining bee populations.

Ayesha’s commitment to sustainability also stems from personal experience. Seeing firsthand how climate change affected farming communities in Sierra Leone reinforced her belief that businesses have a responsibility to protect both people and the planet.

Innovation Means Challenging Industry Assumptions

Honeycorn became one of the early pioneers of gender-neutral skincare—not because it was trendy, but because customer behavior revealed an unmet need.

Through market research and direct conversations with customers, Ayesha discovered that many men were already using products originally marketed toward women. Instead of reinforcing traditional segmentation, Honeycorn designed minimalist packaging and formulations that appealed to everyone.

It’s a reminder that genuine innovation often comes from observing customer behavior rather than following industry conventions.

The Power of Relationships

Throughout the conversation, one theme appears repeatedly: people matter.

Whether finding mentors, attending networking events, participating in trade missions, or securing international partnerships, Ayesha credits much of Honeycorn’s growth to consistently showing up and building authentic relationships.

Business opportunities rarely appear overnight. More often, they’re the result of trust earned through persistence, credibility, and meaningful connections.

Redefining Success for Women Entrepreneurs

Beyond business strategy, Ayesha shares an honest perspective on balancing entrepreneurship, motherhood, and leadership.

Rather than encouraging women to simply work harder, she advocates embracing a different approach—one that values rest, regeneration, and long-term sustainability alongside ambition.

She also highlights the ongoing funding gap facing female founders, noting how significantly underrepresented women remain in venture capital investment despite their potential to generate economic growth.

Her message is clear: success doesn’t require copying someone else’s path. Building a business that aligns with your own strengths, values, and rhythm can be just as powerful.

Looking Ahead

Ayesha’s long-term vision is bold: to build Honeycorn into one of the world’s leading beauty brands while remaining true to its ethical foundation.

Her journey demonstrates that purpose and profitability don’t have to compete. When businesses solve genuine problems, remain adaptable, and stay committed to their values, sustainable growth becomes possible—even in highly competitive industries.
