Reimagining the Foundation: How Science and Heritage Are Revolutionizing Open Footwear
From Legacy Manufacturing to First-Principles Design: A 24-Year-Old CEO’s Vision for Global Comfort
What if the shoes you wear every day are quietly reshaping your feet for the worse? And what if the solution isn’t more technology or complex cushioning, but a return to the basics—engineered with scientific precision?
These are the questions driving Chandan Manocha, the 24-year-old Founder and CEO of Player Footwear Company. In this episode of Industry Ignited, Dr. Leeanne Aguilar explores how a young entrepreneur stepped into a 40-year-old family legacy at the age of 19 and completely pivoted the business model.
Chandan shares his journey of transforming a traditional manufacturing house in New Delhi into an innovation hub that combines modern science with the cultural reality of the Indian climate.
From Computer Science to the Factory Floor
Chandan’s entry into the footwear industry was anything but traditional. A student of computer science and coding, he had zero business exposure when a family crisis forced him to take the reins of the company at just 19 years old.
Entering the business during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic turned out to be a hidden advantage. With operations halted and the global economy on pause, Chandan had time to step back, assess the factory’s legacy operations, and ask a fundamental question: Why are we making what we are making?
First Principles: The Case for Open Footwear
While his grandfather built the business on formal, closed-toe shoes, Chandan applied “First Principles” thinking—a problem-solving approach he carried over from his scientific background—to challenge the status quo.
Living near the equator, where heat and humidity are constant, closed footwear often defies logic. Yet, the market was flooded with it due to western corporate standards. Chandan realized that open footwear (sandals, slides, and flip-flops) wasn’t just a casual alternative; it was the objectively superior choice for the region’s climate.
By pivoting the factory to focus on open footwear, he tapped into a massive, underserved need for breathability and hygiene in tropical environments.
The Hidden Health Crisis: Why Feet Are Getting Wider
Perhaps the most shocking revelation of the episode comes from Chandan’s research into foot health. Conducting gait analysis on a test group, he discovered that nearly 80-90% of participants suffered from flat feet or other deformities.
The root cause? A lack of awareness during childhood. Chandan explains that as children grow, if they do not size up their shoes quickly enough, their feet have nowhere to go lengthwise. Instead, the foot is forced to expand outward, leading to wider feet and fallen arches.
This insight drives Player Footwear’s design philosophy:
- Anatomical Accuracy: Designing “lasts” (molds) specifically for wider Indian feet rather than using narrow European standards.
- Room for Growth: Open designs allow natural expansion and movement, preventing the compression issues caused by tight, closed shoes.
The “One Design” Global Strategy
Chandan’s vision extends far beyond being an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for other brands. He believes that Player Footwear is “one design away” from global impact.
He cites giants like Crocs, Birkenstock, and Adidas Yeezy slides as proof that a single, polarizing, yet comfortable silhouette can conquer the world. By combining sustainable materials—shifting away from pure polyurethane to natural additives—with scientifically backed ergonomics, he aims to create a product that transcends borders.
Bridging the Generational Gap
Innovation is never easy, especially in a multi-generational family business. Chandan candidly discusses the difficulty of leading employees who have been with the company longer than he has been alive.
His advice for young leaders entering traditional industries is simple: Patience.
Changing the mindset of a workforce used to 40-year-old processes requires more than just orders; it requires demonstrating value. By showing that new designs aren’t just “trendy” but are actually easier to manufacture and better to wear, he has slowly aligned his team with his modern vision.
A New Era of Footwear
Chandan Manocha represents a new wave of leadership—one that respects heritage but refuses to be bound by it. By using science to validate comfort and design to shift culture, he is proving that the most impactful innovations often come from reimagining the things we use every single day.
As Player Footwear moves toward launching its own consumer brand, the goal remains clear: to solve the problem of footwear for every person on the planet, one step at a time.
