From Waste to Value: How Emir Avdic is Transforming Recycling Through Leadership, Innovation, and Employee Ownership

What if the biggest challenge in waste management isn’t the waste itself, but how organizations think about people, processes, and long-term value?

That was the central theme of this episode of Industry Ignited, where Dr. Leeanne Aguilar sat down with Emir Avdic, President and CEO of Seabright Products. From growing up across Bosnia, Germany, and the United States to leading one of America’s premier waste handling and recycling equipment manufacturers, Emir shares how global experiences, people-first leadership, and operational excellence are driving innovation in an industry that impacts every community.

Leadership Begins with Perspective

Having lived in multiple countries before the age of 20, Emir developed a unique understanding of leadership that many executives never experience.

His biggest lesson?

Common sense isn’t universal.

What feels obvious in one culture may be completely different somewhere else. Living through different languages, religions, and business environments taught him that effective leadership starts with understanding different perspectives before assuming your own is correct.

Rather than viewing cultural differences as obstacles, Emir believes they become one of a leader’s greatest strengths because they expand the way problems are approached and solved.

Choosing People Over Perfect Strategies

Before joining Seabright Products, Emir spent years helping multinational companies with international expansion, lean manufacturing, operational strategy, and supply chain optimization.

Across industries ranging from automotive and aerospace to furniture manufacturing, one lesson consistently emerged:

People determine whether strategy succeeds.

A mediocre strategy can often be improved by exceptional people during execution.

A brilliant strategy, however, cannot survive poor leadership.

That’s why Emir believes organizations should hire for adaptability, curiosity, and potential—not simply experience. Skills can be developed, but mindset is far more difficult to teach.

Solving Waste by Creating Value

For many businesses, waste management is viewed as a necessary expense.

Seabright Products approaches it differently.

Instead of asking how companies can dispose of waste more efficiently, they ask:

How can waste become an asset?

The company’s custom-engineered equipment helps organizations:

  • Reduce hauling and transportation costs
  • Increase recycling efficiency
  • Divert waste from landfills
  • Recover valuable recyclable materials
  • Improve operational profitability

Rather than simply selling machinery, Seabright works closely with customers to analyze their existing processes, calculate return on investment, and identify opportunities where recycling can actually generate revenue instead of creating expense.

For many organizations, equipment investments pay for themselves within months while continuing to create savings for years.

Recycling Is Becoming a Business Imperative

One of the biggest challenges Emir sees isn’t technology—it’s awareness.

Cities across North America continue to struggle with landfill capacity.

Some municipalities now transport waste hundreds of miles because local landfill space is becoming increasingly limited.

At the same time, environmental concerns such as PFAS contamination, growing recycling demands, and rising transportation costs are forcing organizations to rethink traditional waste handling practices.

Rather than treating recycling as a regulatory obligation, Emir believes businesses should recognize it as an operational and financial opportunity.

Building Culture Through Communication

When Emir joined Seabright, he inherited a successful company with decades of history—but also disconnected systems, departmental silos, and communication challenges.

His first priority wasn’t implementing new software.

It was listening.

Anonymous employee surveys became the foundation for understanding the real issues employees experienced every day.

By consistently gathering feedback, acting on suggestions, and repeating the process over several years, trust gradually increased throughout the organization.

One simple but memorable leadership practice also emerged.

During meetings, whoever calls the meeting receives a judge’s gavel.

Regardless of title or position, that person leads the discussion.

The symbolic gesture reinforces that ideas matter more than hierarchy and encourages employees at every level to contribute their perspectives.

Why Employee Ownership Changes Everything

Perhaps the most significant transformation under Emir’s leadership has been Seabright’s transition to becoming a 100% employee-owned company (ESOP).

For Emir, employee ownership isn’t simply a financial structure.

It’s a cultural commitment.

Every employee becomes more than a worker—they become an owner responsible for protecting the company’s future.

That ownership mindset encourages greater accountability, stronger collaboration, and a shared commitment to long-term success.

Instead of maximizing short-term profits for outside investors, the company’s success directly benefits the people building it every day.

Technology Should Support Better Decisions

Operational excellence requires more than hard work.

It requires visibility.

Under Emir’s leadership, Seabright implemented modern ERP and CRM systems that allow the company to better understand:

  • Product profitability
  • Material and labor costs
  • Inventory management
  • Regional market opportunities
  • Customer demand
  • Production efficiency

These systems allow leadership to make data-driven decisions rather than relying solely on instinct.

For Emir, numbers don’t replace leadership—they strengthen it.

Looking Ahead: AI, Robotics, and Global Expansion

While Seabright continues expanding across North America, Emir is equally excited about the future.

The company is actively exploring opportunities in international markets, including India, where waste management and waterway pollution present enormous challenges.

Artificial intelligence also plays an increasingly important role.

Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for people, Emir sees it as a tool for improving predictive maintenance, operational visibility, and customer service.

Combined with robotics and smarter manufacturing systems, these technologies position Seabright to continue helping customers solve increasingly complex environmental challenges.

Leadership Is About Serving People

Throughout the conversation, one message remained remarkably consistent.

Leadership isn’t about authority.

It’s about people.

Whether interacting with a CEO or a janitor, Emir believes respect should remain the same.

He encourages leaders to understand the work their teams perform, communicate openly, hire adaptable people, and never stop learning themselves.

As organizations grow more complex, technical expertise alone is no longer enough.

The companies that thrive will be the ones that combine operational excellence with cultures built on trust, accountability, and shared ownership.
