Reimagining Lymphedema Care Through Bionic Innovation
Featuring Jordan Pollock, CEO & Co-Founder of SubQ Bionics
Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive condition that affects millions of cancer survivors worldwide—yet it remains widely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and underserved. On this episode of Industry Ignited, host Dr. Leanne Aguilar sits down with Jordan Pollock, CEO and co-founder of SubQ Bionics, to explore how bionic medical innovation could fundamentally change the way lymphedema is treated—and how patients live with it.
Jordan is a biomedical engineer, medical device entrepreneur, and femtech innovator who has dedicated his work to addressing unmet needs in healthcare. His journey into medtech began at Boston Scientific, where he realized that his passion wasn’t in practicing medicine directly, but in building the technologies that enable physicians to do their best work. That realization set him on a path toward entrepreneurship, innovation, and ultimately, founding companies focused on solving meaningful, large-scale problems.
Building Resilience Through Entrepreneurship
Jordan’s career took a defining turn when he moved internationally and eventually founded his first startup in Israel—a country known for its vibrant startup ecosystem. The experience of building a company abroad, navigating new systems, and learning to “roll with the punches” shaped his leadership style and reinforced one of the most important traits for entrepreneurs: resilience.
After shelving his first company, Jordan carried forward critical lessons that directly influenced SubQ Bionics. Chief among them was the importance of solving big problems with clear market demand—and growing thoughtfully rather than too quickly. These insights helped him refine both his approach to innovation and team building.
Understanding the Hidden Burden of Lymphedema
During the conversation, Jordan sheds light on lymphedema, a condition that affects up to 65% of breast cancer survivors, with women representing roughly 80% of the patient population. Caused by damage to the lymphatic system during cancer treatment, lymphedema leads to chronic swelling, pain, limited mobility, and recurrent infections. Current treatments rely heavily on compression garments and time-intensive external therapies—requiring significant patient compliance and disrupting daily life.
What struck Jordan most during patient discovery was the sheer desperation many patients feel. Managing lymphedema often consumes hours each day, impacts travel, clothing choices, and even basic quality of life. Despite its prevalence, patients are frequently told to “just live with it,” highlighting a long-standing gap in women’s health innovation.
A Set-It-and-Forget-It Bionic Solution
SubQ Bionics is working to change that narrative with an implantable, fully internal, bionic lymphatic system. Designed to function as a “set it and forget it” solution, the device continuously drains excess fluid without requiring patients to wear compression sleeves or alter their daily routines. By mimicking the body’s natural fluid movement, the system aims to restore mobility, dignity, and freedom to those living with lymphedema.
For Jordan, the motivation to push through the complex regulatory and development pathway of a Class III implantable device comes back to one thing: the patients. Coupled with a deeply committed team and a mission-driven culture, that purpose fuels SubQ Bionics’ long-term vision—reaching millions of patients and redefining standards of care.
Lessons for Founders and Innovators
Jordan also shares practical advice for aspiring medtech entrepreneurs:
- Start with real patient pain points, not “cool” technology
- Engage deeply in customer discovery
- Build resilient teams
- Rethink the perceived risks of entrepreneurship
His leadership philosophy centers on balance—protecting health, relationships, and mental well-being while navigating the inevitable highs and lows of startup life.
