The Water-Emitting Workhorse: How On-Site Hydrogen is Solving the Heavy-Duty Transport Puzzle

From Real Estate to Resilience: Saleem Rahim Tula on Building the Infrastructure for a Clean Fuel Future

What if the future of fueling up a heavy-duty truck takes just 20 to 30 minutes, yet the vehicle’s only tailpipe emission is pure water vapor?

In this episode of Industry Ignited, Dr. Leeanne Aguilar is joined by Saleem Rahim Tula, President and CEO of PowerTap Hydrogen Fuel Corp. They dive deep into the realities of hydrogen fuel cell technology, dispelling outdated myths and revealing why true clean energy requires more than just batteries.

From Real Estate to Renewable Resilience

Saleem’s journey into clean energy infrastructure didn’t start in a lab; it started in real estate development. He discovered that transitioning to renewable energy shared the exact same foundational challenges: optimizing land use, navigating zoning, and facilitating alignment between diverse stakeholders.

His early work in military gasification projects taught him a critical lesson about infrastructure: the absolute necessity of resilience and grid independence. Whether powering a military base or a massive data center, energy systems must be able to withstand external shocks.

Demystifying the Fuel Cell

For the skeptics, Saleem offers a brilliantly simple explanation of how a hydrogen fuel cell works. Instead of relying on a heavy battery, the vehicle pipes hydrogen gas through a fuel cell, which separates the electrons from the protons. These electrons join with incoming oxygen, producing the electricity that propels the motor. The only byproduct? Water vapor.

The Hindenburg Myth and the Reality of Safety

When people hear “hydrogen,” many immediately think of the Hindenburg. Saleem addresses this outdated fear directly:

  • The Physics of a Leak: Hydrogen is the lightest molecule in the universe. If there is a leak, the gas shoots straight up into the atmosphere and dissipates instantly.
  • The Danger of Diesel: Petroleum, on the other hand, pools on the ground during a spill, creating a highly flammable, lingering hazard.
  • Station Design: Modern hydrogen stations are specifically designed with open tops so any escaping gas can immediately vent safely into the air.

The Sweet Spot: Heavy-Duty and High-Uptime

While battery electric vehicles (BEVs) dominate the light-duty consumer market, hydrogen is the superior tool for specific operational gaps.

  • Long-Haul Transport: A heavy-duty truck can fill up with 70 kilograms of hydrogen in 20 to 30 minutes, delivering 350 to 400+ miles of range. This completely avoids the massive payload penalty of carrying heavy battery packs.
  • Material Handling: Forklifts in warehouses can operate constantly without needing to be parked for 8-hour charging cycles.

The PowerTap Differentiator: Blue Hydrogen On-Site

Most hydrogen today is produced in massive central facilities and then transported via diesel trucks—which entirely defeats the purpose of carbon reduction.

PowerTap is changing the logistics entirely by producing hydrogen on-site using existing natural gas lines via steam methane reformation.

  • Zero Transport Emissions: Producing fuel directly at the pump eliminates the need for delivery trucks.
  • Carbon Capture: This “blue hydrogen” process captures the resulting CO2 emissions, which PowerTap then sells to off-takers like dry ice makers.
  • Compact Footprint: By shrinking the technology, their systems can fit into a 1,600 to 2,000 square foot space—essentially taking over the footprint of an old car wash at an existing gas station.

The “All of the Above” Strategy

To survive the next decade of industrial transformation, Saleem argues that we must abandon the “winner-takes-all” mentality. Electrification is a massive piece of the puzzle, but a resilient future demands an “all of the above” approach that includes hydrogen and other renewables.

PowerTap is currently commercializing its third-generation technology, racing to build the infrastructure corridor today so that the fuel is ready when the wave of hydrogen trucks hits the road at the end of the decade.
