Building the Future of Energy: How Tal Mund Is Powering Israel’s Clean Energy Revolution
In every industry, there are pioneers who don’t just follow markets but create them. In Israel’s renewable energy landscape, that pioneer is Tal Mund, Founder and Chairman of BL Energy. From being an early mover in private power generation to building Israel’s first large-scale battery energy storage systems, Tal has consistently stepped into uncharted territory—long before it was mainstream.
On Industry Ignited, Tal shared his journey from corporate finance to renewable energy entrepreneurship, the mindset that helped him seize opportunities before others, and his vision for a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
From Finance to the Frontlines of Energy
Tal’s first exposure to energy came in the early 2000s, when new reforms allowed private companies to own and operate power plants. What began as an investment opportunity soon became a lifelong pursuit.
“I found it fascinating,” he recalls. “Energy combines technology, regulation, finance, and global markets. It’s complex—and it matters.”
He soon expanded into solar and wind projects across Europe and Israel before setting his sights on the next frontier: energy storage.
Seeing Opportunity Before Others
What makes Tal a first mover? He credits a mix of timing, vision, and persistence.
Timing: “You need luck to be at the right moment,” he says.
Vision: The ability to connect dots across markets, technology, and regulation.
Persistence: Building trust with partners, investors, and customers long before the proof of concept exists.
BL Energy itself was born during COVID, when international firms couldn’t travel. With no clear regulation or market in Israel, Tal and his partners built the country’s first commercial-scale battery storage project from scratch—convincing customers to take a leap of faith against global giants like Tesla.
The Missing Link for Renewables
For Tal, battery energy storage is the critical enabler of renewable adoption. Without it, grids struggle to handle the variability of wind and solar.
“Storage gives grids flexibility,” he explains. “It stabilizes flows, balances supply and demand, and unlocks the full potential of renewable energy.”
This flexibility isn’t just for utilities. Communities—from Israeli kibbutzim to European towns—are beginning to use localized storage to gain independence, optimize consumption, and accelerate their green goals.
Scaling Through Partnerships
A key to BL Energy’s growth has been its partnership with CATL, the world’s leading battery manufacturer. Beyond technology, Tal emphasizes the relationships built at every level—from executives to engineers.
“We helped them understand markets, they helped us build solutions. It’s been mutually beneficial, and it gives us credibility as a premium provider.”
Europe and Beyond
While BL Energy leads in Israel, Tal sees Europe as the next big opportunity—particularly in early-stage markets like the Baltics, Romania, and Poland, where governments are investing heavily to strengthen independence and green infrastructure.
The company has already secured contracts in the Baltics, supporting countries detaching from Russian grids, and is expanding further into Central and Eastern Europe.
Lessons for Entrepreneurs
For those looking to innovate in capital-intensive industries, Tal offers simple but hard-earned advice:
Be patient. Complex industries take time to mature.
Plan ahead. Even with uncertainty, outline where you’re going and what it takes.
Find the right partners. Success depends on trust, chemistry, and aligned vision.
Stay resilient. “If you’re looking for quick money, energy isn’t the place,” Tal cautions.
What’s Next for BL Energy
Looking ahead, Tal sees BL Energy continuing to scale both as an integrator and developer of storage projects, with aspirations to go public in the next two to three years.
Personally, he’s considering new ways to share his experience—whether through mentoring, investing, or building alongside the next wave of innovators.
“Energy storage is just the beginning,” Tal reflects. “The future belongs to those who create solutions that make the grid more flexible, communities more independent, and the world more sustainable.”
