Turning Adversity into Innovation: The Resilient Journey of Robert Lewis

Entrepreneurship is often described as a journey of resilience, vision, and relentless problem-solving. For Robert Lewis, owner of Quester, a leading market research firm, and Freedom to Roam Walker, innovation has been less about chasing opportunity and more about turning personal adversity into solutions that change lives.

In his conversation with Dr. Leeanne Aguilar on Industry Ignited, Lewis shared his four-decade career spanning finance, land management, real estate, research, and mobility innovation—and how challenges that might have ended most careers became catalysts for his greatest work.

From Adversity to Perspective

At 21, Lewis was diagnosed with Chiari malformation, a rare condition that led to multiple surgeries and, ultimately, an incomplete quadriplegic diagnosis. Despite losing much of his physical independence, he refused to give up.

“I’ve had people ask me why I’m not suicidal,” Lewis admits. “But I want to see how this thing turns out. We don’t get great days—we get great moments. For me, it’s that first sip of coffee in the morning, or sharing experiences with people. That’s what keeps me going.”

This resilience shaped not only his life but also his leadership style—grounded in persistence, humility, and relentless curiosity.

Building Businesses, Turning Around Companies

Before his health challenges, Lewis had already built a reputation as a turnaround specialist, helping over 1,500 financially distressed businesses stabilize and thrive. Remarkably, only 12 ended in bankruptcy.

That work eventually led him to Quester, a struggling firm with a powerful but underutilized AI-driven research tool. With his vision and leadership, Quester transformed into a globally recognized research company, serving household-name brands and winning prestigious awards like the ESOMAR EXPLOR Award and David Ogilvy Award for excellence in market research.

His leadership philosophy was simple but powerful:

  • Hire people smarter than you.

  • Delegate and empower.

  • Treat employees like adults.

Under his guidance, Quester became a culture-driven, low-turnover organization where employees thrive with flexibility and ownership.

The Birth of the Freedom to Roam Walker

In 2006, after post-surgical complications left Lewis without the use of his arms, he faced a daunting new reality. But once again, innovation grew out of necessity.

At 3 a.m. one night, Lewis had a dream that showed him how to build a mobility device tailored for people like him. With the help of engineers, he developed the Freedom to Roam Walker—a patent-pending, stand-up mobility aid that gives users independence without requiring arm strength.

Unlike heavy, restrictive therapy equipment, his design is lightweight, collapsible, and adaptable for users of different sizes. It has already helped stroke survivors, people with cerebral palsy, and others regain independence.

One story still brings Lewis to tears: an 18-year-old with severe CP who walked for the first time using his device. “Her whole family was crying,” Lewis recalls. “I didn’t cry until they did—but it was life-changing.”

Balancing Business with Purpose

Today, Lewis is gradually stepping back from Quester as trusted leaders take ownership, while dedicating more of his energy to Freedom to Roam Walker. Though self-funded and slow to scale, the walker has been VA-approved and is already making a difference for veterans and patients in rehabilitation facilities.

Lewis has turned down offers to sell the company, fearing that larger corporations might shelve the product. “This device works. It keeps me out of a wheelchair—and it changes lives. It’s not about the money. Worst-case scenario, I’ve built something that gives me freedom.”

Lessons for Leaders

Lewis distills his life and leadership philosophy into a few timeless lessons:

  • Stay true to your values. “If you don’t have good ones, get them. Karma will either embrace you or kick you.”

  • Hire brighter people than yourself. “It makes you look better—and helps them grow into leaders.”

  • Be humble. Admit when you don’t know and be willing to learn.

  • Care, genuinely. “Get to know your people and their families. If you don’t mean it, fake it—and you’ll learn to mean it.”

For Lewis, success is simple:

“Being able to do what you want, when you want. That’s freedom.”

Looking Ahead

As Lewis continues to mentor leaders at Quester and refine the walker, his next passion project is writing. He plans to author a book on life with caregivers, sharing stories and insights from decades of lived experience and the remarkable professionals who’ve supported him.

Through every reinvention, Robert Lewis has lived out one consistent truth: adversity doesn’t end possibility—it creates it. His journey shows that resilience, values, and vision can turn even the hardest trials into innovations that elevate lives far beyond our own.
