When Personal Pain Sparks Breakthrough Innovation: Zach Lyon and the Future of Pelvic Therapy

What happens when a deeply personal health crisis collides with decades of engineering expertise? For Zach Lyon, it became the catalyst for an innovation that could transform care for millions suffering silently from chronic pelvic pain.

In this episode of Industry Ignited, host Dr. Leanne Aguilar sits down with Zach Lyon, CEO of H3 Pelvic Therapy Systems, an industrial designer and engineer with more than 30 years of experience and over 40 U.S. patents. Together, they explore how simplicity, empathy, and relentless problem-solving can drive meaningful innovation in one of healthcare’s most overlooked areas.

From Elegant Design to Human-Centered Engineering

Zach’s approach to innovation was shaped early in his career at NC State’s School of Design, where he embraced the KISS principle — Keep It Stupid Simple. Working alongside renowned designers, he learned that the most powerful solutions are often the hardest to create because they strip away complexity rather than add to it.

That philosophy carried through his work across aerospace, automotive, EVs, and medical devices. For Zach, great products are functional works of art — intuitive, reliable, and built to endure. It’s the same mindset that later became foundational to H3 Pelvic Therapy Systems.

A Crisis That Changed Everything

Zach’s entry into pelvic therapy innovation wasn’t planned. It was born out of an intense personal health struggle during the COVID era, as grueling work schedules and long hours of sitting triggered severe hemorrhoidal and pelvic pain.

When conventional medical options offered little relief, frustration turned into experimentation. Zach retreated to his workshop and built a crude prototype — not as a business idea, but as a way to function and survive. What happened next surprised even him: the solution worked.

That moment sent him down a rabbit hole of discovery. As he began quietly sharing early prototypes with others suffering from pelvic pain, the feedback was staggering — improvements in pain, control, and quality of life that traditional therapies had failed to deliver.

When Innovation Becomes a Mission

One story, in particular, changed everything. A woman drove six hours to try Zach’s device for bladder pain syndrome. Months later, she told him it had kept her from taking her own life.

For Zach, that was the turning point. This wasn’t just a clever engineering solution — it was a purpose-driven mission. The emotional weight of hearing words like gratitude, hope, and dignity eclipsed anything he’d experienced in his corporate career.

From that point forward, the focus shifted from selling a product to building a safe, clinically validated medical device capable of delivering real change.

A New Approach to Pelvic Pain Care

The H3 Pelvic Therapy System uses precise thermal modulation to influence pain signals at the nerve level — locally, not systemically. Unlike medications that often come with serious side effects, this approach delivers controlled heating and cooling directly to affected tissues, helping reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and accelerate healing.

By maintaining consistent, sensor-controlled temperatures, the system avoids the risks associated with ice packs, heat pads, or sitz baths — all while offering patients a dignified, at-home therapy option.

Clinicians are responding with enthusiasm. Institutions like Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC see the potential for fewer drugs, earlier hospital discharges, reduced ER visits, and better patient engagement — all while adhering to the principle of do no harm.

Redefining Choice in Healthcare

Zach is clear about what success looks like five years from now: choice.

Choice for patients who want control over their pain.
Choice for clinicians seeking effective, empathetic tools.
Choice for people who have lived too long in silence, stigma, and despair.

As Zach powerfully notes, “Those with good health have many dreams. Those with bad health have one.” H3’s mission is to help people reclaim their ability to dream again.
