From English Major to CCO: How Third Coast Is Scaling Without Losing Its Soul

Redesigning the Engine Mid-Flight: Balancing Nimble Execution with Operational Discipline

What happens when a company grows faster than its processes? Do you slow down to catch up, or do you redesign the engine mid-flight?

For Third Coast, a fast-scaling chemical company known for its nimble execution and technical chops, the answer is a delicate balance of both. In this episode of Industry Ignited, Dr. Leeanne Aguilar sits down with Angie Griffin, Chief Commercial Officer at Third Coast, to discuss how a literature scholar ended up running top-line growth for a major chemical manufacturer—and the lessons she’s learned about leadership, logistics, and legacy.

The Accidental Executive: From Academia to Supply Chain

Angie’s path to the C-Suite was anything but linear. With a Master’s degree in English Literature, she was on track for a PhD and a life in academia. But reality hit in the form of a need for health insurance.

She took an entry-level customer service job at a chemical company, thinking it would be a temporary stop. Instead, she fell in love with the puzzle of the supply chain.

However, her climb wasn’t without friction. At a large global corporation, she found herself blocked by a “blueprint” mentality—the idea that you needed a specific degree (like accounting) to hold specific leadership roles, regardless of capability.

The Pivot: Angie moved to Third Coast, a smaller, founder-led company that didn’t care about checking boxes. They cared about results. This shift defined her leadership philosophy: Put people in seats where they highlight their strengths, not where they are trying to fix a weakness.

The Growth Paradox: When “Just Get It Done” Becomes Risky

Third Coast grew rapidly by being the company that said “yes” when others said “no.” But as Angie notes, a “just get it done” attitude works for a team of 15, but it becomes a liability for a team of 300+ in a hazardous chemical environment.

When Angie and her team tried to map out their “Order to Cash” process on a whiteboard, they expected a simple flow. Instead, they found a “delicate and tangled web.

The Insight: You cannot fix a process from the boardroom. Angie realized that any sudden movement by leadership would break the web. They had to go into the trenches and get input from the people physically moving the paper and the product to untangle the workflow without stopping the business.

Leadership Mantra: “You Don’t Have a Problem, You Have a Project”

One of the standout takeaways from the episode is Angie’s approach to empowerment. When team members come to her with an issue, her response is simple:

“It sounds like you have a project.”

She coaches her team to navigate problems, not just escalate them. By shifting the mindset from “complaint” to “project,” she empowers the employees closest to the work—the operators and managers on the floor—to own the solution.

Investing in the Trough

While the chemical industry is currently in a “trough,” Third Coast is taking a contrarian approach. Instead of pulling back, they are:

  • Expanding rail car spots.
  • Adding reactor capacity.
  • Hiring and training staff before the assets are even live.

This strategy ensures that when the market turns, their people are already culturally ingrained and operationally ready, rather than scrambling to catch up.

The Yin and Yang of Succession

As the company moves toward a generational transition, Angie describes a fascinating dynamic between the founder, Jim (the Visionary), and his son, Trace (the Process-Minded President).

To survive the next decade, the company must blend the founder’s fearless, “nimble” spirit with the financial and operational discipline required of a mature enterprise. It is not about replacing one with the other, but finding the balance that allows them to scale safely.
